The storyline of the game unfolds from mid-July 1942 to January 1943 and describes the events of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second World War. Within the framework of two detailed campaigns, the player must first direct the offensive of the German army units to Stalingrad and the subsequent capture of the city, after which, assuming command of units of the Red Army, liberate the Soviet stronghold from the Nazi troops and achieve complete defeat of the 6th Wehrmacht army. Unlike other games on this topic, in "Stalingrad" each mission is built taking into account historical realities and is tied to what happened during the Second World events both in time and in place. In addition, separate combat missions are organized in such a way that the campaigns as a whole give a real picture of the developments in the theater of operations at that time.
