Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Services RDS CALs are terminal client access licenses that enable secure remote user connectivity, access from managed or unmanaged devices, connection to session-based or virtual machine desktops, and use of data center applications on corporate networks or from the Internet.

An RDS CAL is required for each user or device that connects to a Remote Desktop Session Host. An RDS license server is required to install, issue, and track RDS CALs.

A client access license (CAL) is required for each user and device that connects to an RD Session Host. An RDS license server is required to install, issue, and track RDS CALs. When a user or device connects to an RD Session Host server, the RD Session Host server determines whether an RDS CAL is needed.

Microsoft Windows Server CAL 2022 is required for Microsoft Windows Server Standard and Datacenter.
