Product Description
In O. Stern's experiment (1920), silver atoms ejected from the surface of a hot filament passed through a slit and settled on the cooled wall of the outer cylinder (Fig. 16.4). When the system was put into rapid rotation, the image of the slit shifted. The device was first rotated in one direction, then in the other, and the distance between the displaced images of the slit was measured. Find this distance if the radius of the inner cylinder is 2.0 cm, the outer cylinder is 8.0 cm. The rotation speed of the device is 2700 rpm, the filament temperature is 960 °C. Estimate the measurement error if the width of the slit itself is 0.5 mm.
